Greens powders like AG1 are dietary supplements containing blends of dried, powdered superfoods. While every brand is different, common ingredients include grasses, vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, herbs, blue green algae, probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes.

Research indicates that a diet plentiful in produce is best to help prevent chronic disease and increase longevity,  and yet most Americans are falling short of the recommended daily intake of whole fruits and vegetables.

With that said, there are some features that may not be ideal for your individual needs.

This comes out to about $2.50 to $3.50 per serving, and that’s without the shipping cost!

Not fully organic

If you’re looking to boost your health with a greens powder, you’ll want to look at all product features that will impact your wellbeing – including whether the product is organic.

Non-organic ingredients come with pesticides and herbicides, chemicals which can produce both short- and long-term health consequences.

Since green powders are dehydrated and ground to a fine powder, you’re getting a tremendous amount of produce – and pesticides – in one small scoop.

Addition of synthetic vitamins

‘Whole’ vitamins and minerals are found in whole foods, naturally occurring in fresh vegetables, fruits, and proteins. Synthetic vitamins and minerals are those that are isolated from whole foods into a singular compound. Often, these synthetic micronutrients are not absorbed into the body quite as readily as vitamins from whole foods.

Athletic Greens add isolated vitamins to their greens powder to help make their nutrition facts more appealing. While this may seem innocuous, and for many people it may be, it means their product is a bit more processed.

Other green powders, including Ensō Supergreens and Bloom Greens & Superfoods, rely solely on the high quality, nutrient dense ingredients to impart whole vitamins and minerals.

Excessively high nutrients

This brings me to my next point: Excessively high micronutrients. Athletic Greens’ nutrition fact panel may blow most other greens powders out of the water in terms of vitamin and mineral amounts, but from my perspective this is not a benefit.

As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I look at someone’s total daily food and dietary supplement consumption to understand if they are meeting – or exceeding – their recommended micronutrient intake.

If throughout the day you are consuming vitamins and minerals in amounts hundreds of percentages higher than your Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), you could be getting close to an unsafe level. Especially for fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, which are stored in the body and accumulate over time rather than being excreted.

Athletic Greens has well above 100, 200, and even over 500% of your RDA for most of its vitamins and minerals. If your individual health needs require you to be aware of high dose nutrients, or if you are already taking high dose supplements, this greens powder may not be for you.

With such a steep price point, it’s assumed that most ingredients in Athletic Greens are quality and of highest bioavailability – meaning they can be digested and used by the body well. While it seems they do add many easily-absorbed superfoods, the type of chlorella they include may be unusable by the body.

Chlorella is a blue green algae with a plethora of health benefits, but it has strong fibrous cell walls that cannot be broken down during digestion. This is why in many greens powders, including Ensō Supergreens and Amazing Grass Greens Blend, you’ll find broken or cracked cell wall chlorella. Always look for this type to gain full health benefits.

Too many ingredients

While 75 vitamins, minerals, and superfoods sound amazing, when you pack too many ingredients into a small scoop, you’re left with only a small amount of each. Diluting all the important ingredients may cut down on how effective each one can be in imparting health benefits.

What could be better

Like Athletic Greens, this greens powder adds isolated vitamins and minerals to boost their nutrition facts panel. Additionally, only about one-third of Green Vibrance’s ingredients are organic.

And while they do not have the 75 ingredients that Athletic Greens touts, it does have almost 50, so the concentration of superfoods is not as dense as it is with Ensō Supergreens.

Both FOS and inulin are prebiotic fibers, important food sources for the friendly bacteria in your gut.

Bloom includes a variety of superfoods, including grasses, leafy greens, and adaptogens, along with an attractive number of berries. These petit powerhouses are antioxidant-packed and have been linked with anti-inflammatory properties.

Additionally, Bloom Greens covers many taste needs by providing five flavors.

What could be better

Bloom Greens & Superfoods contains probiotics, but unlike Ensō Supergreens and Green Vibrance, we have no idea how many CFUs are included in the product. There could be a gut-benefiting amount, or just a sprinkling for show.

Moreover, only six of their 30+ superfood ingredients are organic. According to the US Department of Agriculture, berries and leafy greens tend to be contaminated with higher levels of pesticides than other crops.   

A final note on ingredients. While this greens powder uses chlorella powder, it does not specify if it is broken cell wall chlorella for best bioavailability. Additionally, be aware that Bloom contains green tea leaf, which may impart some caffeine.

Like Ensō Supergreens, Amazing Grass Greens Blend has all organic superfood ingredients, so you can enjoy this greens powder knowing it’s pesticide-free. Plus, you know they’ve done their research because it contains cracked cell wall chlorella among their 20 ingredients.

Another benefit is that Amazing Grass has multiple flavors. If the Original is not to your liking, you could try Berry or Chocolate instead.

What could be better

Unfortunately, there’s no indication of how many CFUs of probiotics are included in the Amazing Grass formula. While we’d hope there’s enough to make a difference in your gut, there’s just not enough information to confirm.

Additionally, while you can enjoy this Greens Blend without pesticides, the product is not third-party tested, so we can’t be certain there aren’t other contaminants. It also contains green tea leaf extract, so avoid taking it before bed due to the potential caffeine content.

But what truly disappoints is the added ingredient silica. When used in powders, silica is often plays the role of a bulking and anti-caking agent.

Beyond Greens has a very limited variety and diversity of superfoods, and only a few of them are technically greens. There are no grasses, vegetables, or fruit to provide a well-rounded boost to your overall health.

The biggest concern though is not that it is superfood-limited, or that it has very few probiotics and no digestive enzymes, but rather the inclusion of additives and fillers. Beyond Greens contains the filler xanthan gum and the colorant sodium copper chlorophyllin. It also contains xylitol, a sugar alcohol that may create digestive distress for some people. Plus xylitol has an unusual taste that may not be received well.
